Fresh momentum is building behind Taylor Gill and Dan Brkic’s push towards a WRC2 program, with new discussions in Europe opening a genuine pathway for action in 2026.

The latest development centres around an opportunity to run a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 – one of the standout cars in the series – for three rounds of the World Rally Championship.

After finishing second in the Junior World Rally Championship in 2025, the pair needs to raise a large budget to remain competing in the WRC, and despite this new opportunity, the financial hurdle remains significant. However, it’s one that’s become far clearer in recent days.

Instead of requiring the full rental fee, Gill can access this Rally2 car at a subsidised rate.

It has given renewed optimism to the cause of keeping them in Europe, and after months of chasing leads, this is the first option that seems achievable.

“We’ve had a really good opportunity arise to get a few rallies off the ground for 2026 in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2,” Gill told RallySport Magazine today.

“It’s been a bit difficult trying to make the numbers work to get something happening for WRC2 so far, but this opportunity gives us a far more realistic target to aim for.”

Through his Finnish contacts, Gill can step into the Toyota, pending funding, and is working the phones feverishly to make it a reality.

If the required budget is secured in the timeframe needed, Gill will be starting his season in February and driving at three familiar rallies of the WRC.

“The plan would be for Dan and I to start the year in Sweden, before competing in Croatia and Finland,” Gill added.

“These are all rallies I know and have done twice before, so it will give us the best chance to hit the ground running and show our talent at the next level.”

Gill’s experience at these rallies gives him valuable reference points and knowledge of the roads.

“Our thinking is that one tarmac event, one gravel event, and the snow event in Sweden is the perfect launch pad to learn the car. By starting in Sweden, we will be able to push its limits with the ‘safety’ of the snow banks.”

While the great opportunity with this car and team has appeared, there’s no question that should they fail to secure the budget, it will be snapped up by another young driver armed with more cash, leaving the Australians without a chance to continue their careers.

“It’s something very surreal that we have a genuine opportunity to drive this type of car and be a part of WRC2,” Gill continued.

“It’s the next logical step for our careers, and even if it’s only three rallies to begin with, it gives us a platform to try and prove ourselves.”

Entries for Rally Sweden will open within the next week, with the deadline looming in the middle of January.

It gives Gill and his small team the best part of a month to confirm the financial support required to get the events off the ground.

While negotiations continue overseas, Gill has remained active at home, including a ride day with sponsors and supporters. He has also given back to the next generation of young drivers at a recent training day.

“Our recent day at the Westlakes Automobile Club went really well. Even though I’m still young myself, I’m finding a real passion for supporting the grassroots kids, as it’s where I started.

“I know how much I enjoyed these opportunities to work with more experienced drivers,” Gill added.

“We set up a motorkhana track, followed by a couple of sections of the rallysprint track, involving key corners where I could talk them through specific techniques and what to look for to maximise their speed and ability.

“To see such big smiles was the perfect way to end the day.”
